Motorbike rental is a widely used and practical mode of transportation in Vietnam, particularly for short-distance travel, urban commuting, and regional exploration. For visitors and business travellers, renting a motorbike offers flexibility, cost efficiency, and direct access to local areas that may be less accessible by car or public transport.
Motorbikes are readily available for rent in major cities and tourist destinations, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Hoi An. Rental arrangements are typically informal, with daily or weekly rates offered through hotels, rental shops, and private operators. Renters are advised to inspect the vehicle carefully, verify braking systems, lights, and tires, and document any existing damage before use.
Safety considerations are essential when operating a motorbike in Vietnam. Wearing a helmet is legally required and should be strictly observed at all times. Riders should ensure they possess an appropriate international or Vietnamese driving licence, as insurance coverage may be invalid without proper documentation. Defensive riding, controlled speed, and heightened awareness of traffic flow are critical, particularly in congested urban environments.
From a professional perspective, motorbike rental can be a convenient transport solution when approached responsibly. By prioritising safety, legal compliance, and cautious riding behaviour, travellers can utilise motorbikes effectively while minimising risk and ensuring a positive travel experience in Vietnam.

Cash:
To change physical cash USD VND there are multiple ways to do this.
• Change in your local country before entering Vietnam, be sure to declare if you have the equivalent of $10,000USD when entering the country. (better exchange rates once you enter Vietnam)
• Exchanging cash at the airport upon arrival. This is one of the better options when exchanging currencies, the exchange rate might not be as good as you want it to be.
• The best place to exchange currencies is a bank. They handle everything professionally and is a safe place to make the transaction. Make sure when you are exchanging at a bank you bring your passport and if you have bigger notes 50’s 100’s and notes that ARE NOT damaged, you may get a slightly better rate. Exchanging larger amounts can also land you a slightly better rate but not always. $1000usd $5000usd
E-Wallet:
Setup: In Wise, open a Balance account, add USD, and request USD account details (routing + account number; approval can take a few days). In the Moreta Pay app, go to Profile → Add a bank and enter/link those Wise USD details so Moreta can fund your Moreta wallet from your Wise USD balance like a US bank account.
How spending works: Your Moreta wallet is held in USD. When you pay a merchant QR code (e.g., in Vietnam), Moreta converts USD to local currency at the time of payment using the live mid-market rate; the conversion cost is the bank spread (~0.6%).
This option is great if you’re travelling for a longer period. Less cash to worry about and 99% of merchants in Vietnam will accept this type of pay. Carrying cash is always good for emergencies 1-2 million VND. Want to go out for dinner or grab a drink and want to take as minimal stuff as possible this way of purchasing goods is very good.
Fees (Moreta + Wise, nothing hidden):
• Bank-transfer deposits into Moreta: Free if deposit > $250 USD (or > 200 GBP / 225 EUR). Below that: $1 (USD transfer) or $1.50 (EUR/UK transfer).
• Card deposits into Moreta: 2.5% processing fee (charged in USD; instant).
• QR payments: Thailand = 0% fee (no cash back). Vietnam/Philippines/Laos/Mongolia/Cambodia = 1.5% fee per payment (no cash back).
• EUR/GBP deposit conversion inside Moreta: mid-market + 0.5% spread (converted into USD before it hits your wallet).
• Withdrawals from Moreta back to bank: US bank (incl. Wise USD details) = $1 + 0.5% of amount; up to 2 business days. EUR/UK bank = $1.50 + 0.5%.
• Wise-side costs (separate from Moreta): Wise may charge a one-time fee to get your first set of account details (region-dependent), a conversion fee when you convert into USD, and a transfer fee depending on whether you send via ACH vs wire (fees are shown in Wise before you confirm). Receiving USD by ACH into Wise is generally free; receiving a domestic USD wire typically has a small, fixed fee.
Card:
• card is good if you don’t want to set up a moreta pay account and a wise account and aren’t worried about the international transaction fee that your bank will charge and some merchants will charge you a EFTPOS fee on top of the international transaction fee, also a withdrawal fee may be present if you want to withdraw cash from a local ATM. Banks will charge a $1-$4 withdrawal fee when getting cash out and 1%-3% EFTPOS fee on card payments. Some can charge 5% fees if you pay by this method.
Currency & payment tips (cash vs. card, e-wallets)
Vietnam maintains a structured visa and entry framework designed to facilitate tourism, business travel, and long-term residence while ensuring border security and regulatory compliance. Travellers are required to meet specific entry conditions based on nationality, purpose of visit, and intended length of stay.
Vietnam offers several visa categories, including tourist visas, business visas, and e-visas. The e-visa system allows eligible passport holders to apply online prior to arrival, providing a convenient and time-efficient option for short-term visits. Visa-exemption arrangements are also in place for selected nationalities, permitting entry for a limited duration without prior visa approval, subject to passport validity requirements.
All visitors must hold a passport valid for at least six months beyond the date of entry and possess onward or return travel documentation when required. Immigration authorities may request proof of accommodation, sufficient funds, or confirmation of travel purpose at the point of entry.
From a business and compliance perspective, travellers are advised to confirm visa conditions well in advance of departure, as regulations may change. Overstaying a visa can result in fines, administrative penalties, or restrictions on future entry. Maintaining accurate documentation and adhering to entry requirements ensures a smooth arrival process and supports compliant travel to Vietnam.
